Story
Ayodhya and Mithila rejoiced as Ram and Sita wed. The kanyadaan was performed by Janak with deep wisdom: ‘I give Sita, an equal in dharma, to Ram.’ The four brothers married the four Videha princesses, uniting two noble lineages. Yet the epic hints that every auspicious beginning will be tested by time.
Why it matters
Janak's words at the wedding — giving Sita as an equal in dharma, not as property — are still quoted at Hindu weddings today. The joy of this scene is also the epic's calm before the storm: everything that follows tests what's promised here.
