Story
In Panchavati, a golden deer enchanted Sita. Ram went to capture it, asking Lakshman to protect Sita. The deer was the asura Maricha. When Sita heard a cry mimicking Ram, she urged Lakshman to search; crossing the protective Lakshman‑rekha invited danger. Desire and doubt opened the door to the next calamity.
Why it matters
A moment of simple desire — Sita wanting the deer — sets off the epic's central crisis. It's often read as a caution that even good, loving people can be drawn into danger by wanting something beautiful without asking what it really is.
