Bharat returned, horrified by his mother’s demand and the king’s death. He went to the forest begging Ram to come back. Ram refused, bound by maryada. Bharat then placed Ram’s padukas on the throne and ruled as a sevak‑regent from Nandigram, vowing austerity till Ram’s return—an exemplar of nishkama leadership.
