Ravana’s brother Vibhishana advised surrender and the return of Sita. Spurned, he sought sharan under Ram. Despite doubts, Ram accepted him, stating, ‘One who comes seeking refuge—even if formerly an enemy—is mine.’ Sharanagati becomes policy and principle.

Ram accepts Ravan's own brother into his camp on the spot, with no test or probation — his line, that anyone seeking refuge deserves it regardless of where they came from, is among the most quoted verses in the entire epic.
