Story
Bali, invincible in close combat, oppressed Sugreev’s people. Ram struck Bali from concealment while he fought Sugreev. On his deathbed Bali accepted Ram’s rajadharma reasoning and counselled Sugreev to rule justly. The episode debates means and ends in statecraft.
Why it matters
This is one of the Ramayana's most debated episodes — Ram strikes Bali from concealment rather than in open combat, and tradition has argued the ethics of it for centuries. Bali's own acceptance of Ram's reasoning, and his final counsel to Sugreev, is usually read as the epic inviting that debate rather than settling it.
